We are always having gatherings over at our house, whether it be a family birthday party or baby shower. I love to host a good party, and especially love to host a brunch. After hosting so many brunches I feel like I have it almost down to a science and wanted to share my secrets to success that I have learned over the years.
Selecting dishes that can be prepped in advance is key to a smooth running party that you can enjoy as much as your guests. The day before the party I try to have everything completely ready to go including making as many dishes as possible. My favorite dishes to serve for brunch are: quiche, scones/biscuits, fruit salad, and spinach salad. For the quiche I fix everything the day before and refrigerate, so all I need to do in the morning is put it in the oven. For the spinach salad, I measure out all the ingredients and put them in little baggies or containers so the next morning I just need to pour together, mix and serve. The fruit salad I make the night before as well so I just need to pull out of the refrigerator and serve.
Enable Guests to Help Themselves
Creating a set-up that enables guests to help themselves makes your guests feel at home and frees you up to enjoy the party and your guests. I always set up a coffee and tea station with matching neutral coffee cups, sugar, creamer, tea bags, hot water, and coffee. I also have a bucket full of cold drinks to choose from and three pitchers: one with cucumber water, one with iced tea, and one with pink lemonade. I love using mason jars as glasses so I have those next to the drink bar with pretty paper straws. I also always have an ice bucket with tongs available.
The Little Details Matter
I think that the little details are the memorable things that your guests take away and make a party feel well done. Maybe I am old fashioned but I always use cloth napkins and nice white plates. Many times I will also make little paper napkin rings (in the shape of a heart or bunny) that I tie around the napkins with twine. It is super easy to do (I trace the shapes using cookie cutters and then put two hole punches to thread the twine through) and is such a nice personalized touch. Most importantly I always have fresh flower arrangements throughout the house.
Keep your Supplies Together and Ready for an Impromptu Gathering
Sometimes I do host impromptu dinners and that is why I always keep all my supplies in one cabinet ready for use. After I wash my cloth napkins I immediately fold and put away in the cabinet so they are ready for the next time.
