With my daughter getting older, I wanted to refresh her all pink “baby” room into something she could continue to grow into. Previously the room was all pink (almost a little overwhelming) and was decorated with lady bugs. Cute for a baby room but not so much now that she was older. I got her into the design process to help make it her own but the rule was we both had to agree to any update or item purchased. Here are the steps we went through to update her room from “baby” to “girl”:
While everything was all pink previously we added aqua and gray to the color scheme and I love how the combination of these colors came together! It made the room look fresh, fun, and vibrant. To tone down the pink we painted two of the walls gray and added aqua accents (the bookcase, chair, pillows, etc).
Almost all her bedding is from Pottery Barn Kids including the bed. They have such a beautiful selection of kids sheets and duvet cover patterns that you can’t find elsewhere. They also hold up really well and if you shop the sales online are really not that expensive. We also got her bed from Pottery Barn Kids. It is the Catalina bed which was very reasonably priced. I love this bed because it grows with them. When they are a toddler you can lower the bed so they can crawl into it all by themselves and you can buy a wooden guard rail that matches to prevent them from falling out of bed. When they are older you can raise it up to be just a regular sized twin bed frame.
Functional Furniture (Chair, Desk, Bookcase)
We added some functional furniture now that she is getting older. A desk, desk chair, and a bookcase. See my earlier post on how I created these adorable personalized crates for the bookcase: https://homefromheart.com/2018/09/12/personalized-toy-storage-solutions/. Many of these pieces we did in the aqua color to incorporate this color into the room. The bookcase we ordered came in teal, so I painted an aqua color to match all the aqua that we used throughout her room.
Deciding on the lighting was a struggle. I wanted a traditional chandelier, she wanted something a little more glamorous and fun. We found this flush mount chandelier that we both loved.
My daughter loved this shag rug but I was nervous about if I would be able to vacuum it and how well it would hold up. We ended up getting it and it was the best decision, it is SO cozy!! Vacuuming it was not problem at all and I love it so much I am thinking about buying a second one for the living room!
This was a really fun mother daughter bonding experience and it was fun to see her come up with great design ideas that I would never have thought of! Now we have a room that we both love and that she can continue to grow into!
