Besides changing out the lighting, adding rugs to a room is the single most impactful change you can make to a space! It can take a space from blah to WOW! Rugs not only define a space but create layers within a room that make it look “finished” and transform a house into a home. It is incredibly important however to pick the right size rug. This is the biggest mistake that I see people making! When in doubt order larger!! You also want to pick a neutral pattern that is not going to distract from your other decor in the room. For a long time I thought I couldn’t use rugs in my spaces because most of my rooms have carpet. Rugs on carpet are not only allowed, I would say are even more necessary! Rooms washed in a sea of beige carpet are lost! They need a rug to define the space and anchor a room. I am here to tell you that rugs on carpet are a game changer! Define the space
I would argue that rooms with carpeting are even more in need of a rug than rooms with hardwood. A large room of beige carpet is like a large sea, the eyes don’t know where to settle on. By adding a rug you are adding a life boat to the room. The eyes immediately settle on the space covered in the rug and the viewer now knows what to do with the room. This space is for sitting it tells the guest, or this is the path to the kitchen.
Create layers to make a room look “finished”
I am a big proponent of layers within a room. Layers transform a house into a home. They tell the story of your family. They make guests feel at home and comfortable. They are the little details within a room that transform it. Adding a rug to your room is like adding a cozy blanket. It makes the room look cozier and draws people in.
Pick the right size
The biggest mistake that I see people make when selecting a rug is buying it too small. A too small rug is worst than no rug at all. When in doubt size up, it is worth the extra money! You want to make sure that the rug is large enough that all the major pieces of furniture are at least partially underneath the rug.
Choose neutral pattern to enhance room decor instead of distract from room decor
You want the rug to have a color and pattern so it stands out from the carpet but you don’t want a pattern that is so busy that it distracts from the rest of the room. In our family room, I didn’t have a lot of other patterns going on so I felt comfortable going with a bolder trellis pattern in the NuLOOM Machine Made Vernazza Trellis Gray Rug. In the master suite I wanted something muted, soothing, and more traditional so I went with the Dorothea Ivory/Gray Area Rug. In both my daughters rooms that already had a lot of patterns and color going on I went with the nuLOOM Vintage Floral Grey Rug and the Soft and Plush Diamond Trellis Moroccan Lattice Shag Rug. I was nervous about buying a shag rug but this one vacuums up totally fine and is so luxurious and soft! I am considering ordering another one for a different room!
I wish I wouldn’t have waited so long to add rugs to all my rooms! Adding rugs to carpet has been such a game changer for my home!
